Nestled amidst the picturesque foothills of majestic Kilimanjaro lies the charming village of Materuni, renowned for its aromatic, flavorful coffee and inhabited by our welcoming Chagga hosts. Embark on an aromatic and delightful excursion where you’ll have the opportunity to craft your own cup of coffee the traditional way, learning the secrets to the perfect brew from the local Chagga community. Following this immersive coffee experience, embark on a short yet invigorating hike to Materuni Falls, where you can stand beneath the cascading waters as they gracefully descend into a serene pool, inviting you for a refreshing dip. After your hike, indulge in the rejuvenating embrace of the cool waters, providing a soothing respite. Whether you enjoy your packed lunch before or after your swim is entirely up to you – there are no strict guidelines, only the promise of a memorable day filled with fragrant coffee, invigorating hikes, and tranquil waters.
You’ll be presented with two transportation options to journey between Moshi town and the village: for those yearning for an authentic experience, hop aboard a dala dala, the local minibuses, while those seeking swifter and more comfortable travel can opt for a private car.
Upon arrival at the village, your coffee tour commences at a traditional Chagga “shamba” where your guide will illuminate various facets of Chagga homestead life, including their diverse crop cultivation beyond coffee. Witness the coffee production process firsthand, from bean picking to roasting, culminating in savoring a delightful cup brewed on site. Following the coffee tour, embark on a brief hike (be sure to don sport or mountain boots, as it can get muddy) through local villages to reach the enchanting waterfalls. Your choice awaits for lunch: indulge in a picnic lunch box or savor a freshly cooked meal prepared by one of the local families.
Post-lunch, relish the opportunity to take a refreshing (albeit quite cold!) dip in the pools nestled beneath the waterfalls.
